About

Dr. Antoaneta Dimitrova is professor of Comparative Governance in the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University. Her research has explored the link between European integration, democratization and administrative reform, especially, but not exclusively in the context of the Eastern enlargement of the European Union. She has analysed the effects of European Union conditionality on post communist states from Central and Eastern Europe and has found that conditionality did play a major role in promoting formal compliance with the EU administrative criteria and the adoption of laws on the civil service and administration. Her other research interests include the transposition of EC law and especially the role of coordination mechanisms in candidate states in facilitating adoption of the acquis. Antoaneta's interest in democratization and the ability of the EU to extend governance beyond its borders has also developed in studies of Ukraine and a comparison of the EU and Russia's influence. She is currently leading research with in EU-STRAT project evaluating the EU's neighbourhood policy towards the EU's Eastern neighbours.
