This panel brings together comparative papers on institutional determinants of presidential power and government (in)stability across presidential and semi-presidential regimes. Focusing on institutional explanations of president-cabinet dynamics, e.g. cohabitation, party institutionalization, and intra-executive conflict, the panelists provide both large-N cross-country analyses and focused comparisons of specific regions and countries. At the very forefront of presidential politics research and with novel datasets and innovative approaches, the panel sheds new light on government survival in various presidential and semi-presidential contexts.
