Abstract

The European Convention on Human Rights and European Union and European Union law aims to safeguard democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Europe. Breaches of these core principles can be challenged in the European Court of Human Rights, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and in domestic courts. Currently, several European states are, however, experiencing democratic backsliding. This panel brings together scholarship investigating the ability of Europe’s supranational courts and domestic courts relying on European law to protect democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
