Trade, Technology, Human Rights, Environment: Multiple Dimensions of China’s Global Rise

Abstract

Chinese growing global presence plays out in various areas of international relations. Differences between Chinese and once unquestionably dominant western approaches with regard to issues such as human rights, development of new generation technologies (including IT), the rules of global trade or the tension between economic progress and environmental sustainability shape a large part of contemporary global politics. At the same time, economic interdependence between the rising power and other major actors in the global system seems to prevent, at least for now, the possibility of an all-out competition or conflict. The tensions will, however, tend towards resolutions in the foreseeable future, and it is up to social scientists, among others, to try and predict the outcomes, or at least offer innovative interpretational perspectives. In this panel, a group of scholars from diverse regional, disciplinary and methodological backgrounds assesses some of these issues. The behaviors and postures of various important actors are evaluated, with the focus being shifted more towards key issues of softer, non-military nature, all the while keeping in mind the complexities of overall geopolitical competition that is at play. Is there a possibility of cooperation on softer issues which would curb the prospects of global escalation, or will the seemingly iron law of geopolitics completely overwhelm the relations between China and its main partners and competitors?
