Back and Forth: Democratization and Democratic Backsliding

Abstract

How can political institutions safeguard democratizations efforts and which circumstances reinforce incentives to dismantle existing checks and balances? This panel brings together a variety of papers addressing democratization and democratic backsliding and the role of institutions in these processes. The papers highlight that the specifics of institutions significantly influence political pluralism, government performance, polarization and fairness of elections.
