Travelling to Sofia

By air

10km east of the city centre, Sofia's airport (SOF) is serviced by conventional and low-cost carriers including Air France, British Airways, EasyJet, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air and many others. Find cheap flights at Skyscanner.

Getting from the airport to the city centre

Metro
Metro Line 1 from SOF Terminal 2 (free shuttle every 30 minutes between Terminals 1 and 2) goes to the city centre and to nearby large residential complexes Druzhba and Mladost, as well as to Zapaden Park and Lyulin, more distant complexes to the west.

Journey time to the city centre is approximately 18 minutes, and costs around 1.60 BGN – less than €1. Trains run every 10–20 minutes, depending on the time of day, between 05:00 and 23:30.

More information at Metro Sofia.

Taxi
Use only licensed cabs; taxis are known to overcharge in Sofia.

Find OK Supertrans taxis at both terminals.

Alternatively, download the TaxiMe Mobile App and create an account. Taxis ordered should arrive within 3–4 minutes.

Cost: 10–13 BGN / €6–7.

Bus
Bus 84 runs to the university every 10 minutes. Journey time approx. 40 minutes. Cost: around 1.60 BGN – less than €1. More information

By train

With direct connections from Belgrade, Bucharest, Budapest, Paris and Vienna to Sofia Central Station, it may be cheaper to travel by train than to fly. Visit The Trainline for tickets and prices. Book at least a week before you travel.

By bus

A cheaper alternative to rail, particularly if you buy advance tickets. Sofia enjoys direct bus connections to 14 cities; find out more at FlixBus.

By car

  • From the North and South via E79/A6
  • From the East via Thrace Highway E80/A1-A3 or from the old road parallelling the E80 Highway
  • From the West via A1/E80

We recommend you park in a paid, guarded lot. Parking in the centre is difficult, and if you do find a free space, the Bulgarian police tend to behave harshly towards foreign license plates. Driving to or from the country you must have a vignette on every highway, or you risk a fine of 200 BGN (€100). Buy vignettes at the border or at any fuel station, and display them in the bottom right corner of your windscreen.
