Health and safety

We are acutely aware that things have changed considerably since our last in-person Winter School in 2020. Our goal is to help you reconnect safely.

Please help us make you and your fellow participants feel as comfortable as possible by following the guidelines outlined below.

Please also carefully review KU Leuven’s Hygiene and Safety Measures. The content is continuously updated, so do keep monitoring this page closely.
Check travel advice

If you are travelling from overseas, please closely monitor the official travel guidelines of your home country.

Refer to the Belgian government’s website for the latest and most accurate information about travelling to and within Belgium.

Remain mindful of social distancing

Consider that others might not be fully comfortable at large gatherings, and some may be at high risk or immunocompromised.

If you feel unwell

If you are feeling unwell or test positive for covid-19, please do not attend your course in person.

Our Events Team are happy to offer their assistance in arranging virtual participation, should you feel well enough to continue.

Dial 112 for ambulance, police and fire brigade.

Good to know

For tourist information, please visit to this page.

While the main language in Leuven is Dutch, most locals speak English. You may, however, find some directional signage confusing. Below are a few tips from our local organisers to help.

Station Names

  • IC means Inter City, and you will see this mentioned frequently in the main train station.
  • Voie (French) and Spoor (Dutch) mean Platform.
  • You may see Leuven (Dutch) also spelt as Louvain (French). Please note, however, that Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve are NOT the same.
  • Brussels South station is also known as Bruxelles-Midi (French) and Brussel-Zuid (Dutch).

Toilets

  • Female in Dutch is Dames.
  • Male in Dutch is Heren.

There are no luggage storage facilities on campus. You may take your luggage with you to the classroom, however, please take care not to obstruct the fire exits.

Eduroam

Connect via eduroam using your personal password from your home institution.

KU Leuven Wi-Fi

We will provide login details for the local Wi-Fi at the premises if you do not have access to Eduroam.

If you need to copy or print anything, you'll find a Printing Shop in front of College De Valk.

Refreshments

Click here to see our host's suggestions for where to eat and drink within walking distance from campus.

When it comes to tips, Belgium is comparable to Germany: tips are appreciated but as a sign of appreciation for good service. You are not required to leave them, certainly not if you had just a little something.

Make sure to carry a reusable water bottle. Find water stations around the campus for refills on the go. You may also refill your bottle in the bathroom.
