Ten years since our General Conference was held in Bordeaux, the team at Sciences Po Toulouse is thrilled to be participating in the return of ECPR to France.
In 2023, Sciences Po Toulouse celebrates its 75th birthday and we look forward to bringing the ECPR community together to celebrate this milestone.
This prestigious higher education and research establishment is autonomous within one of the oldest universities in Europe: The University of Toulouse, founded in 1229.
Sciences Po Toulouse took its inspiration from Sciences Po Paris founded in 1871, and afterwards, from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Following suit, an order issued by General de Gaulle in 1945 set up Institutes of Political Studies in some of the largest cities in the country to democratise the recruitment of France’s elite.
Since opening its doors in 1948, Sciences Po Toulouse has grown to just over 1,600 students who are rigorously selected via a nationwide examination.
Now located downtown Toulouse in the historic buildings of the former Tobacco Factory, between the banks of the river Garonne and the waterway that connects the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean, Sciences Po Toulouse is a Grande Ecole within the University of Toulouse, with its own governance, budget, and personnel.
Comprising 50 permanent and 300 occasional faculty members, its teaching team is fuelled by a constant quest for scientific excellence and practical expertise. The curriculum takes a multi-disciplinary approach that provides future generalists with the high level of grounding in skills that they need across four disciplinary pillars – history, law, political science and economics.
Its five-year Master curriculum (+ PhD for a smaller cohort) aims at equipping graduates with a broad understanding of the challenges, issues, stakeholders, vulnerabilities of our contemporary world, and the needed skills, methods and competencies to become effective and agile professionals, able to take fruitful initiatives and make sound decisions to pave the way for a better future.
Nearly 170 international partners allow for constant student exchanges and collective research projects.
As a result, each year Sciences Po Toulouse welcomes around 120 students and 12 visiting scholars from all over the world, including some of the most prestigious universities. It comes as no surprise that 20% of its graduates find their first job abroad, and its dynamic network of alumni spreads all over Europe, and other continents.
With its policy that aims at proactively promoting gender equality and social diversity, including the DISPO programme which empowers teenagers from disadvantaged regions, Sciences Po Toulouse is proud to welcome 60% female students and 35% of students receiving grants.
Sciences Po Toulouse develops ambitious research activities in the field of social sciences at large. Its permanent faculty members, and associated researchers, work across two units, LaSSP and LEREPS, which are well integrated into research projects at regional, national, European and international levels.
Sciences Po Toulouse welcomes a dozen of foreign visiting professors each year, and many more researchers on collaborative projects. In addition, many overseas PhD students are conducting research within its two laboratories.
The Laboratory of the Social Sciences of Polity (LaSSP) combines a variety of disciplinary approaches to the political, to politics and to public policies. It brings together scholars from the fields of Political Science, Public Law, Sociology, History and Information-Communication, many of whom are specialists in comparative politics and European studies. Their common practice in the social sciences insists on the importance of fine-grained field research (le terrain) and bottom-up perspectives.
The three current research domains of the LaSSP are:
The Laboratory in Economic, Policy and Social-system Research (LEREPS) insists on an empirical and interdisciplinary approach to economic issues based on structural analysis, behaviour and decisions of different actors, combining Economics, Sociology, Geographical Planning, as well as Management, to a lesser degree.
The work carried out at LEREPS is structured around a unifying research theme: the economic aspects of societal transitions, both in the North and the South. The objective is to better understand the dynamics of structuring productive worlds, with three interrelated fields of application: the governance of resources, territorial governance and the governance of financial systems.
The focus of LEREPS' research is therefore collective action in its various forms, such as public policies, participatory decision-making or the organisational strategies of networks of actors.
